1. What was Live Nation? What was Ticketmaster? (Include information business dealings, history and CEOs.) Live Nation was the largest concert promoter in the United States whose CEO was Michael Rapino. It was a spinoff of Clear Channel Communications in 2005. The House of Blues locations came under Live Nation ownership in 2006. This greatly increased the number of its venues. Some statistics about Live Nation from before the merger include it owning 75 domestic venues and 42 international venues, it had 22,000 events every year, it was in charge of the Super Bowl halftime show, and over 50 million people attended its events ever year. When the merger was announced Ticketmaster and Live Nations stated reasons such as improved efficiencies and cost savings for shareholders, management and consumers (Too Big To Fail?). One of the way these cost savings was going to come about was through the removal of middleman (Smith). Before they decided to merge they were on a collision course which would have to have ended with a merger or a battle (Smith). Lastly, the changes in the music industry with records producing less and less money and ticket quantity and price going up they thought the merger would be good for everyone in the music business from artists to fans. As far as a microeconomic answer to why Ticketmaster and Live Nation pursued the merger the quick answer is being a monopoly is better for the firm. Monopoly is defined by the Mankiw textbook as, â€Å"a firm that is the sole seller of a product without close substitutes.† All firms want to be the sole provider of their good or service because than they can charge whatever price they want and consumers are forced to pay it. Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe is a unique historical fiction novel which portrays life during the American Civil War. In this story, Harriet Beecher Stowe tells the tale of Uncle Tom, along with several other slaves, and their journey through the wretchedness of slavery. She combines ethics, redemption, religion, and prejudice and presents her readers with an immensely powerful book that gives off an awe-inspiring impact. Throughout the novel, Harriet Beecher Stowe touches the reader’s heart through lifelike characters and emotions. Due to Mrs. Stowe’s articulate ability to create a realistic image in her readers’ minds, I was left with a multitude variety of sentiment while reading the book. From this one quote, I could feel the intense anger and hatred against slaves. Moreover, this is just coming from one person. Knowing that there were thousands of Simon Legree during the Civil War era can leave you flabbergasted. Along with evil masters, I was glad to know that there were also kind masters who saw the good in all; even the colored. These type of people were portrayed by the Shelbys, Augustine St. Clare, Eva, and Miss Ophelia. I was happy that even during the worst times, people like them had the courage to go against the world and spread happiness in the world. However, I found it wrong that calamities struck to only those who did good. For example, due to debt the Shelbys had to sell their slaves, Augustine St. Clare and Eva both died before they could free their slaves, and there was nothing Miss Ophelia could do to save Uncle Tom from being sold again. Reaction Paper On Students Cheating While reading Generation What? Connecting with Todays Youth I found myself disagreeing with some of the points made by author Carol Tell. I am a mix between a Generation X-er and this new un-name generation. However, I did agree with a few ideas. I mostly definitely disagree with the statistics stating, 9 out of 10 teachers say that cheating is a problem. Here is my argument, if they knew effective teaching methods, we wouldnt cheat. To back this up, I have a great example. In high school, I chose to take Italian as my language, being that I am Italian and come from a background where a dialect is used on a daily basis. My teacher (who I had for Italian I, II and III) never taught the class well. She would yell at us constantly for not understanding what she was instructing. And then she would wonder why no one did well on exams. I do admit to making a cheat sheet for a few of her tests and quizzes, I did this after seeking help and tutoring from my parents. So, in rebut to this argument, I can clearly state that if a teacher wanted to feel that cheating wasnt a problem in the classroom, they would have to understand and meet the needs of their students. But, a point that I can understand is when Tell states that youth are less violent, take better care of themselvesetc. The only time one hears of a violent teen is in the rarely occurring school shootings, in which adults classify us as being violent. If society looked at our population as a whole, they would see that juvenile crime and teen pregnancy have both dropped and that teen drug use has declined. We are being judged for events caused by a small amount of the teen population. For instance, two teens rampage through a school killing 14 of their classmates, now the whole teen population is looked at as horrible people. Some, like I, just want to get through life without having a label stapled to their shirt. The bad seeds, if you will, are the ones that rain on our parade. Education
